A197 BOARD STATEMENT ON ARTISTIC FREEDOM
Assembly 197 (the home of Tasdance and Situate) aims to transform artists, arts
practice and audiences through working with inquisitive artists in regional practice,
connecting with communities in Tasmania and beyond. We are committed to the
safety of all those who engage with the arts practice we support, whether as artists,
participants or audiences, and to the safety of the wider community.
We are equally committed to artistic freedom, providing the space for artists to
challenge us in ways that can be provocative and uncomfortable. Engaging with this
kind of artistic practice rewards asking questions and respectful engagement.
These commitments are driven by our values of deep listening, deep thinking and
deep learning. Upholding these values requires opening space for difficult
conversations about experiences of art making, language, history, and community.
This can be challenging for our organisation and audiences, but censorship of
meaningful artistic practice is not safety.
